Autumn Flowering Cherry
Botanical name: Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis Rosea' Family name: Rosaceae Common name: Autumn Flowering Cherry
Origins: This variety has been in cultivation in Japan from at least 1500.
Comments: This form is often listed as Autumnalis only. It makes a good small tree to 4m with an upright to spreading habit. It also makes a good container plant as it gets quite twiggy and as a result sets many flowerbuds. In a container it flowers very freely. The flowers are blush pink to white and appear 3 times a year for us in Taranaki - Feb-March, May-June, and September, with the September blooming coinciding with Prunus 'Awanui' and P. subhirtella 'Falling Snow'. The June flowering is possibly the most useful and satisfying, since this is a fairly stark time of year in the garden.
Propagation: This variety is usually grafted, but it may also be grown from semi-ripe cuttings under mist in summer.
